I wore the wrong boot for a year. (and didn’t know it)

I wore the wrong boot for a whole year because I was scared to switch, not because it was a bad boot or anything, because it was familiar. And I think we all do this with outdoor gear, way more than we realize. For the last year, I wore the Merrell Moab 3. Good boot, reliable, and I knew it had virtually zero break-in, how it fit, how long it lasted, all those things. I even wore two pairs completely out. So, when I tried on a pair of Keen Targhee 4's, I liked them better instantly. Better feel on trail, better fit, and honestly, a better vibe overall, but I still wore my old Moab's for a month because they were safe. The Targhee was a question mark, even though every signal I had was that it was a better boot for me. And this isn't just a boot thing. I see it constantly in outdoor gear. People stick with a jacket brand for a decade, even if there's something new that offers way better value. It's not even big purchases either. When I'm choosing snacks for a hike, I default to a chocolate chip Clif Bar. Even though, in my opinion, it's like the most boring flavor you can think of. Instead of opting for something new, and taking the risk. We treat gear loyalty like a personality trait. Instead of a decision that can be re-evaluated, I've got about 300 miles on the Targhee's, and I already know they're my go-to boot. It's too soon to tell whether they're actually better than the Moab's. But I will say this, the fact that it took me months to make a decision and a month more to actually make these my new go-to even after knowing that they were awesome right out of the box, that's worth examining. So, here's the actual question worth asking. Is the gear you keep buying actually the best or just the stuff you're comfortable with? And I will do a proper comparison once the Targhee's are all blown out, but for now, go check your closet. you might be more loyal than logical. If you fancy switching up the old dirt cookie next time you go on a hike, do check out my sponsor, Full Stop. Sourdough Crackers. They're pretty good, and you can find them at Sprouts or through the link in the description. But thanks for watching. I'll see you next time.
